Tips For Preparing Your Quilt

A carefully constructed quilt top, with attention to detail, will result in a lovely finished quilt. Proper preparation of the quilt top and backing are essential. Please use the following tips as a guide. Quilt preparation you choose to have done by me will be charged at $20.00 per hour.

Quilts should be flat and smooth to be quilted without puckers.
If your quilt top has no borders or bias edges it may be a good idea to sew stay stitching at 1/8”
Check to be certain a seam has not come unstitched and that adequate seam allowance has been taken.
Stray threads should be removed from the quilt top
The quilt top should not have any buttons, beads or embellishments. These are best applied after quilting.
The quilt backing and batting must be 6”- 8” larger on all sides than the quilt top.
The quilt top and backing must be carefully pressed.
Square the quilt top and backing.
Busy backs are best
Bed sheets are not suitable for backing.
Keep the top, backing and batting separate.
Borders should not be wavy. To make perfectly fitting borders, take the average measurement of the quilt top    both on the edges and down the center. This is the length to cut both borders with a square cut. Pin borders for    an even fit and stitch. Repeat for other borders.
